The Cannes Lions festival takes place every year in Cannes, France as one of the of the most influential creative festivals around the globe. The coronavirus pandemic has affected the 2021 event and will focus most of the event towards its digital efforts. What is Cannes Lions?
The first Cannes Lions festival began it’s legacy as an international film festival. The inspiration for this festival sparked from the International Advertising Film Festival, held in 1954. This festival was a world-wide event with 14 participating countries for advertising professionals to share, critique, and award work.
At the first festival, The Lion of Piazza San Macros in Venice inspired the lion trophy at the Cannes Lions festival. The second year the festival was held in Monte Carlo, then in 1956 it was held in Cannes, France. In 1984, Cannes became the festival’s permanent location, with Roger Hatchuel taking a modern twist on the festival shortly after in 1987.
The event now specializes in creative advertising works from billboard ads to global television advertisements. The festival offers speakers from creative advertising companies, awards for the best projects of the year, and more.
The 2021 Event
This year the Cannes Lions event will take take place from June 21st to June 25th, as a digital-first event. For those that are attending the event in-person, they will experience a hybrid event that is both digital and physical. The event will feature live and digital content, experiences, and more.
The event will be different than previous years not only because of their virtual component, but because of the pause in the event in 2020 due to the pandemic, they are going to feature work from the past two years.
